A group of newly freed African-Americans settled near Cave Springs after the Civil War and established a community there than lasted until the 1930's-1940's. The all-black school in the photo was in a church building, which was later made into a school. In the photo are (back row) Willie Rolands, Kate Rolands, Elton Ferguson (uncle of donor), Helen Richardson Kelley (b. 1894), mother of Frances Brewer who is sister-in-law of donor.
